Khmer Rouge Letter
Dear Father and Mother, This has been really hard for me being away from you. The people in these camps are starving and people die every day. When Hitler became chancellor, I thought for sure he would make Germany great again. Now we are not great, we are falling and this war is what's bringing us down. I don't know whether to try to love and support my country, or to try and get out of here and avoid all this misery. With all these people trapped here with the feelings of being sad and upset, I can't help feeling the same way. It makes me feel unhappy to know that these people aren't getting enough to eat, and the children can't have fun or play. They're trapped by these horrific walls that the soldiers put up. I'm angry and frustrated; because these people did nothing wrong and they don't deserve the punishments they are getting. They are getting beat for their religion, starved for their race, and burned because of how they look. The worst part of this being, I know some of these people, friends and family of mine being put through pain and torture. In a way it hurts me more than them, and I fear that I will never recover from seeing these things. The other day I watched an old man get beat because he tripped. Tears filled my eyes as he grimaced from the pain. Blood dripped down his legs and he shook in fear, I turned to leave because I didn't want to watch this. Then I turned back, I hesitated. Then I ran up in fury and pushed the soldier down, I yelled at him and carried the old man away. I sat next to the old man for several minutes, and he stared into my eyes. His face showed gratefulness for having saved him. Then slowly, he closed his eyes and took one last breath. Now I sit in a locked shed, being punished for my wrongdoings. I am truly sorry mother and father, if I never get to see you again.

Nonfiction Writing: Instructions On How To Make A Bed

Final & Justification:
Anna Kiminski Hr. 1 Writers Workshop: Instructions How to Make a Bed:
The first mattress was filled with horse cloth hair and covered by a cloth. This was done around the year 800 BC. Sarah E. Goode was granted a patent on beds on July 14, 1885. Popular materials now used in bed manufacturing are wool and cotton.
Supplies Needed: -Bed frame (optional) -Mattress -Comforter (optional) -Sheets -Pillow(s) & Pillowcase(s) -Stuffed Animals (optional for a child's bed)
Steps:
1. Although not necessary in the process of making a bed, before beginning it might be a good idea to wash your sheets and pillowcase(s). Bedding is usually washed on a hot/cold load. Using this setting will get the sheets the most sanitized. 2. Once the sheets are washed and dried, begin to assemble the sheets on the mattress. 3. First, put on the fitted sheet. The fitted sheet pulls snugly around the whole mattress. Lay it on the mattress, and tuck it in tightly all the way around. 4. Next put on the top sheet, which goes on top of you while you sleep. The top sheet is tucked in around the bottom half of the bed. 5. Now a comforter may be placed on top of the sheets if one is available. Comforters are typically used during the winter. 6. Once this is done, the clean pillowcases can be put on the pillows. Arrange them on the bed so they look nice or are the most comfortable. 7. If making a child's bed, stuffed animals may be placed on bed. 8. Now the bed is ready to sleep in! Enjoy (: "Bed." Invention :. Innovateus.net, n.d. Nonfiction Writing: Informational Piece About The Olympics
The Olympics have been around for a long time, dating back to at least 776 BC, if not earlier. They were first staged in Olympia, Greece, and were held there from when they started to around 393 AD. These Olympics were known as the Ancient Games, and it wasn't until 2,289 years later that the modern Olympics would occur in their current form.
The Ancient Games were used primarily as a religious festival in honor of Zeus. They were held on Mount Olympus, as this was a sacred place to Zeus. In these games, all the athletes were men and women were only spectators. In the mid-2nd century BC, after the Roman Empire conquered Greece, the Games quality declined, before ending the Olympic tradition. Around 1,500 years later the Game’s rose again due to the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He founded the International Olympic Committee and created the Olympics we know today.
Since 1994 the Olympics have been held every 2 years, alternating every time between the summer and winter Olympics. There have been 10 Olympic Games since then, and once the Olympics started again many new events were added.
In the first 13 games the only event was the 600 ft run. Many new events have been added since then; including these:
-Archery (1900 summer Olympics in Paris) -Badminton (1972 summer) -Track and Field (1896 summer) -Gymnastics (1896 summer) -Swimming (1896 summer)
There are 5 sports that have been held every year since 1896. These events are: swimming, gymnastics, fencing, track and field, and cycling. Over the years there have also been events removed due to safety issues or unpopularity, here are some:
There are also some sports that are on the list for the possibility of being added to the Olympics:
-Surfing -Dancing -Karate -Climbing
The next Olympics are the 2016 Summer Olympics being held in Rio, Brazil; and it will be exciting to watch and compare the events to the Ancient Games.
